Restorative Dentistry

Providing Treatment to Lytle, San Antonio, TX and the surrounding areas

Restorative dentistry is both the prevention and treatment of diseases or injury to your teeth. With restorative dentistry, your dentist can restore your teeth and improve your dental health drastically.

From the time we get our first tooth, dental health should be a priority. However, for some, even the best dental care can’t always prevent the need for restorative dentistry. That’s where Dr. Dental in San Antonio, TX comes in.

Types of Restorative Dental Services

There are several types of treatments that fall under the category of “restorative dentistry”. Some of these treatments include root canals, dental implants & crowns, dentures and tooth fillings.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the health of a tooth, the tooth requires additional support, the hard tissue of the tooth has been fractured (trauma) or worn away (grinding), and/or there is recurrent decay and the color of the tooth needs improving. Crowns are typically bonded to the tooth using a dental adhesive or cement.

The most common method of crowning a tooth involves using a dental impression of a prepared tooth by a dentist to create the crown outside of the mouth by a technician. A temporary crown is placed in the meantime, while the permanent crown is inserted at a later dental appointment.

This indirect method of dental or tooth restoration requires the use of strong materials. Fabrication methods use intense heat to cast metal and fire porcelain and ceramics.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are typically required when you have lost a tooth or teeth. For those in good health, dental implants should not cause any major problems. However, there are some conditions that may hinder the dental implant from fusing to the bone such as smoking, diabetes or certain types of cancers.

Make sure you speak with your dental surgeon about any pre-existing medical conditions to determine whether or not dental implants are right for you. If your dentist determines thatdental implants are the right course of action, a full assessment will be done on your mouth by a team of dental surgical specialists. Your current dental health will be thoroughly evaluated and additional procedures, like bone grafting, may be necessary to ensure there is enough bone volume to sustain the implants.
